Midway between the main building at edobarn, and the computer life centre, you'll find my garden. You can stay here a while or:
I've recently developed an interest in cutting hedges, although I don't use a pair of scissors! This spiral is my latest creation. I only made a rough cut in autumn 2001, so I'm hoping the growth in the new year will help define the shape more closely. I have always been fascinated by the rythm of spirals, since they seem to define some sort of mathematical relationship to acceleration, in this case straight up!
Much of the garden is dominated by a large square hedge which stands as tall as the house, and slightly higher than the barn. I clip it twice a year using a tower scaffold, and I get quite obsessive about keeping the edges straight. I call it my "vertical lawn", and it never fails to amaze visitors! Below you can see the square hedge in it's relation to the buildings around it.

This shows the square hedge as seen from my place at the family meal table. This view always reminds me quickly if the hedge is growing out of true. The pergola is just outside our window, and has a vine growing all over it in the summer. When I line it up by eye it gives a very good indication of which bits of tree need as extra pruning. The tree is "leylandii", a species difficult to control and notorious for rapid growth, but this particular example has not grown at all in the last three years. I won't let it spoil the symetry of my view!
