KEY WORDS: Paper, silhouettes, Profiles, Mischo
Ellen Mischo's work "evolves from a passionate interest in early American profile portraits and the frames that surround them." Through thorough research of the styles and techniques of primarily American itinerant (and visiting foreign) shadow artists, and the study and handling of originals, she has created a series of historically accurate silhouette reproductions representing the best American cut profiles from 1790-mid 1840's. I have seen these silhouettes; the small 18th century bust-style silhouettes compare most favorably with my pair of water-spotted antiques. However, I particularly like the individual and family groupings done in the manner of Augustin Edouart, the French profile artist who "brought his talent and the term 'silhouette' to America in 1839." Here the silhouette figures, mounted on a background printed with a Federal-era interior, cast their own shadows in the foreground. To me, this interplay of positive/negative space rendered in monochromatic tones strangely presages photography, the invention of which brought the era of American silhouette art to a close. As a member of the Professional Picture Framers Association, Ellen brings the same commitment to quality and authenticity in framing as to her paper cutting, as the small bust-style portraits most dramatically demonstrate. Restoration glass is available; please inquire as to custom silhouettes.
